Sustainability policies and strategies
Policies: An environmental policy or sustainability policy is only effective if it helps to drive efficiency in your business. We work with clients to deliver policies that speak to the day to day business operations and set out a clear governance structure for implementation, including linking with other business policies as appropriate.
Strategies: Development of a clear roadmap for becoming a more sustainable business. Mapping of risks and opportunities for the business operations and setting measurable targets for tracking progress. Development of plans and templates for internal decision-making.
“Emma has become a much trusted advisor of our Sustainability Team as we begin to really push our agenda within our company and raise the profile of our Sustainability priorities. Receiving independent guidance, support and advocacy is vitally important to our team and Emma does this in a completely professional, supportive and pragmatic way.” Louise Needham, Sustainability Manager, Quorn Foods
Reporting and communications
Mapping and evidencing positive environmental and social behaviours in your business. Highlighting opportunities for continuous improvement. Delivery of reporting to stakeholders, shareholders and investors.
Avoid greenwashing – develop a consistent method for evidencing social media, website and other public marketing statements.
“Emma’s involvement in producing JLEN’s first ESG report was hugely important. She guided our thoughts in this important area, gathered information on our activities and presented it in a concise and impactful way. Our report has been held up as an excellent example to others within the investment company community and regularly receives positive feedback. JLEN retained Emma to produce a piece for the Interim Results and we look forward to continuing our relationship. I would highly recommend her.” Chris Holmes, Investment Adviser, JLEN
Workshops, facilitation and training
We provide a range of sustainability workshops and training sessions aimed at C-Suite, manager level, employees and consultants. Examples include, but are not limited to:
• The global context for sustainability
• An introduction to sustainable finance
• Commercial awareness for environmental professionals
• Facilitation of sustainability strategy workshops
“As a sustainability professional the area of sustainable finance was really quite new to me and Greg and Emma were able to make the course engaging and full of valuable information for me to use and think about both in my professional and personal life. I have even been able to reference some of what I learnt when talking to senior business leaders and it has proved to be another valuable tool to have in the back pocket.” Rebecca Harris, Discipline Manager – Infrastructure Projects, Safety & Sustainable Development, Network Rail
Environmental assessment, auditing and due diligence
Environmental impact and risk assessment: we assess projects to obtain approvals, to better inform development, to manage construction and to enhance operations.
Compliance auditing: we identify and manage gaps, mitigate current and future risks, develop opportunities for improvement. From international standards and guidelines, to management system audits, we can help your organisation achieve compliance.
Environmental, social and governance (ESG) due diligence: we undertake comprehensive project and portfolio assessments, identifying gaps and actions required, in order to support robust decision making.
Our role is to teach you how to integrate sustainability principles into your business practices.
Coaching includes helping you to understand the language, map out your risks and identify your opportunities. Whether you need a sustainability report, some help with environmental footprinting or a comprehensive sustainability strategy, we will guide you through the steps so that you can feel confident implementing a sustainable business plan going forward.
Short answer? Yes!
If implemented correctly and embedded in your business processes, a sustainability strategy can not only save you money through identifying efficiencies but can also drive profit through strengthening your brand, your supply chain relationships and your opportunities for attracting investment.
If you intend to take sustainability seriously then you need a plan. Something that is written down and applied consistently. You do this in your general business activities – and sustainability is no different. If you don’t make a plan, you won’t know what changes you’re making and whether they’ve worked. A strategy does not have to be complicated but it does need to drive consistency.
Follow the Resource Hierarchy: Avoid, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Dispose.
Whenever you make decisions in your business, whether it’s about your electricity bills, a new product or service, or even a business event – apply the resource hierarchy to your decisions. Can you Avoid doing it, or buying it, or using it? If not, can you reduce what you do, or buy, or use? Etc.
Why overcomplicate it? Plain English, straightforward, replicable solutions are what we specialise in.
Avoid greenwashing! Implement a strategy that you can track, manage and be proud to talk about.
